Role Playing Games have been a much needed escape for many members of the g33kWatch staff. Most of us have been playing for at least 10 years, and we have used that time to play different systems, come up with intriguing story lines, and some of us even made our own system complete with our own set of rules.
Suffice to say, we have had a lot of fun with RPGs, but that doesn’t mean that many of our fans know anything about the hobby. Last week there was an episode of the NBC comedy Community, and in it they talked a lot about Dungeons and Dragons. This obviously made people laugh, but we had a couple of people message us on Facebook and Twitter asking us what all this RPG stuff was about, what we knew about it, and how a new person could get involved with the hobby.
So in response to all the questions, we decided to make a little podcast about it. This will be the first of MANY upcoming podcasts where we talk about what is involved when you are starting a Role-Playing Game Campaign. This podcast is simply a teaser, where we discuss how we got involved with the hobby, and what is involved with actually playing. We talk about this in very broad terms, so that no matter what system you decide to begin with, you have an idea of what you can expect.
In the coming weeks we will podcast our process as we construct new Player Characters, go over the process it will take for the Dungeon Master to create the world, and eventually we will podcast / livecast and entire actual session. Fairly exciting we think. =)
If you are looking for an easy way to get involved, we recommend that you read up on Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition, which is provided by Wizards of the Coast. If you pick up the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Handbook, and the Monster Manual, you will be able to have a total blast. The rules are simple, you can do some fun missions, and it’s a very good introduction to the whole RPG craziness. After you play for a bit, and you get a good group of friends involved, you’ll be better equipped to move on to different systems and different settings and really find the right RPG for you.
If you have further questions, be sure to get us on the Forums, Facebook, or Twitter.

Must… R…P…. need it. NEEEEED IT!!!
I hate you all. I’ve had a severe urge, but alas…. I need an emergency roleplaying intervention.
Everyone will RP in due time. New Orleans is being worked out right now, I need to find out Pedro’s schedule.
As for you dear Josh, whenever things settle down over by you, you let me know and I’ll drive on by and we can play a bit. =)
I wanna play again too >_< It's been years…. im a bit rusty
The 4th edition “essentials” series seems to be a good entry into 4th edition. A bit cheaper price of entry than the full edition books. All the core rules in there but a bit less in the realm of classes and skills. I haven’t used it nearly as much as I would like but I’m pretty happy with the books for the price.
