Round by Round Draft Analysis | 2013 g33kBowl Fantasy Football

There's a lot to think about in a Fantasy Football draftAs outlined in my draft preview, Fantasy Football is back!  Time to get back into the swing of hoping that you collect a team that is really good at amassing yards, defensive stops and touchdowns.  Here on the site, we have been lucky enough to run the g33kBowl Championship Series, a ESPN based Fantasy Football league that sees a bunch of g33kWatch Staff play together with our fans and see who can win.  Thus far, I am very happy to report that both years have been won by fans!

Sam of the Scottish Highlanders won in 2011, riding the success of career seasons from Matthew Stafford & Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions, was able to prevail.  In 2012, Scott of the Hopped Up Titans, someone who first played Fantasy Sports with our league in 2011, was able to utilize some of my advice and run away with the entire championship.  While the competitive person in me is pissed that I lost, I’m also immensely proud that fans of the site were able to win.

Makes me feel like my advice may actually be semi-good =)This past Monday, we began the journey to figure out who is going to be our 2013 league champion as we held our online Snake Draft.  I decided that it might be a fun exercise to go round by round and give you some of my thoughts on what I liked, what I didn’t like, and the thought process I personally had with my team.  Maybe this will help people see some of the strategies that go into the draft, and give you a different perspective on how the process can force you to change your overall strategy.

Next week, when I’m writing up my Week 1 predictions, I will also be giving out team threat assessments on a 1-5 scale.  For this article, I’m just going to focus on the drafting process, and what I think people did well.  While it can be fun to just say this team sucks and this team rocks, my commentary is pretty hollow if I don’t provide any context on why I feel a certain way.  So let’s lay down the guidelines and thought process that I have during a draft.

  • Go in with a strategy:  Pretty self explanatory.  As I detailed in my draft preview, my goal initially was to get one of the top tier running backs, potentially going RB / RB / WR / WR in the first four rounds if there were players there I liked.
  • Don’t panic, take what the draft gives you: No matter how many websites you read, or mock-drafts you do, you will never know your actual draft will play out.  Even if every team had the exact same priorities and strategy, they wouldn’t covet the exact same players.  If a player you really wanted is taken, don’t panic.  There are plenty of other good players out there that you can take, and they may not be at the position you wanted to get.  Don’t just take a running back because that’s what your strategy says you should.  When you become rigid in your thinking, that’s when you can / will draft someone way too early and weaken your overall team.
  • Your team is not Cobra Kai, it will have weaknessesYour team is going to have weaknesses, it’s ok:  Every team will have weaknesses, there’s just no way around it.  If you are absolutely amazing at running back, then you might be slightly weak at wide receiver or tight end.  In a league that has 10 or more teams, it is just not possible to be completely stacked at every position.  What you should be focusing on, is how your strengths at one position, can compensate for deficiencies in another.  If you have a stellar quarterback that consistently provides above average points per game, then you can deal with having an average wide receiver or two.  The trick is just knowing which guys will give you those performances and not disappoint.

So it is with those factors in mind that I will give you the follow writeup for each round.  If I don’t mention a pick during a round, that just means I thought it was appropriate and totally fine.

Huge reminder that my analysis here is simply my opinion.  You may agree or disagree with it, but I don’t mean any disrespect with anything I’m about to write.

Round 1
1 Adrian Peterson, Min RB The Besaid Aurochs
2 Aaron Rodgers, GB QB ARRGAN IISOU
3 Marshawn Lynch, Sea RB Zombie Black Bears
4 Arian Foster, Hou RB Mars Space Cowboys
5 Doug Martin, TB RB Cydonia Chryssalids
6 Alfred Morris, Wsh RB NJ Fear Boners
7 Calvin Johnson, Det WR Hoboken Dread Pirates
8 Jamaal Charles, KC RB Soldier’s Peak Wardens
9 Ray Rice, Bal RB Citadel Spectres
10 Trent Richardson, Cle RB Scottish Highlanders
11 LeSean McCoy, Phi RB Hopped Up Titans
12 Brandon Marshall, Chi WR Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • It’s the first round so I liked all of the picks.  I don’t think anyone messed it up at all, everyone took top tier talent at whatever position they valued.

Picks I Loved:

  • Aaron Rodgers is not only a great player, but a snazzy dresser for Fantasy Project Runway leaguesARRGAN IISOU | Aaron Rodgers, GB QB – It’s not hard to say that I like people picking Aaron Rodgers.  He’s the best quarterback in fantasy depending on who you ask.  He doesn’t throw a ton of interceptions, he has an amazing set of wide receivers to throw to, and he can get you some rushing yards / rushing touchdowns to boot.  We all know he’s amazing so why am I putting this here?  It’s a reminder that if you value someone, and you know they someone else will draft them before you next pick, you need to pull the trigger and get them.  Jimmy knew that Rodgers wouldn’t be around in Round 2.  So he just took him, hoping that a solid RB / WR would fall to him in Round 2.  Just because the experts say get a RB first round, doesn’t mean you need to!

Pick I Made:

  • Ray Rice, Bal RB – I had the ninth pick and I knew that I needed to get a touted running back.  The players that I was debating over were McCoy, CJ Spiller or Ray Rice.  Trent Richardson was not in my thought process, just because I don’t like him.  I feel like while he had some nice games last year, his yards per carry was very low.  Meaning, it would take him upwards of 20-25 carries a game just to get average points.  McCoy and Spiller are similar players in my mind, in that they could have gigantic performances, or they cold have duds.  Rice on the other hand is solid in the run and pass game, and is almost a lock to get double digit points every week.  He’s not a sexy name anymore, but he’s safe.
Round 2
13 C.J. Spiller, Buf RB Lunaris Robunnys
14 A.J. Green, Cin WR Hopped Up Titan
15 Julio Jones, Atl WR Scottish Highlanders
16 Drew Brees, NO QB Citadel Spectres
17 Stevan Ridley, NE RB Soldier’s Peak Wardens
18 Dez Bryant, Dal WR Hoboken Dread Pirates
19 Demaryius Thomas, Den WR NJ Fear Boners
20 Jimmy Graham, NO TE Cydonia Chryssalids
21 Steven Jackson, Atl RB Mars Space Cowboys
22 Tom Brady, NE QB Zombie Black Bears
23 Matt Forte, Chi RB ARRGAN IISOU
24 Roddy White, Atl WR The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • This is one badass Julio Jones pictureScottish Highlanders | Julio Jones, Alt WR – I think taking Jones here is too early.  Taking him above people like Demaryius Thomas, Dez Bryant, Jimmy Graham or even teammate Roddy White feels like a stretch.  I know everyone is in love with the talent Jones has, but thus far he really hasn’t demonstrated the ability to be consistent and that would scare me taking him with my second pick.  Jones had 7 games last year of single digit points, and with so many targets in Atlanta (White, Gonzalez, Jackson) it might be difficult to rely on him.  That is just my personal bias though, if he broke out and became amazing it wouldn’t surprise me.
  • Hoboken Dread Pirates | Dez Bryant, Dal WR – I don’t dislike the pick of Dez Bryant.  I actually think Dez is going to have a monster year in 2013.  What I don’t like is the team composition from the Dread Pirates.  The Pirates took Calvin Johnson in the first round, which was fine, but rather than taking Jackson, Forte, MJD or even Bush as a running back, they took another wideout.  As we’ll see in the next few rounds, not getting a decent running back early on is going to bite the Dread Pirates in the ass.

Picks I Loved:

  • Matt Forte politely asking a Lions player to get the fuck out of his wayCydonia Chryssalids | Jimmy Graham, NO TE – Nothing to not like here.  Graham is the best tight end in fantasy and will give the Chryssalids a huge advantage at that position each week.  Combining that with the first round pick up of Doug Martain, and you have a really good combination.
  • ARRGAN IISOU | Matt Forte, Chi RB – IISOU needed to get a solid RB after picking up Aaron Rodgers in the first round and there is no one more reliable and solid than Matt Forte at this point in the draft.  Maybe Forte doesn’t have the upside potential that some of the other backs have, but the consistency is something that should be coveted, especially since all the rest of the running backs on the board have some serious question marks.

Pick I Made:

  • Drew Brees, NO QB – I went into this draft with the thought of doing RB / RB the first two rounds.  Yet when I looked at the best available, Brees just stood out to me.  I love Steven Ridley as a number 2 RB, but I have him in another league and wanted some new players.  Steven Jackson, Matt Forte and Maurice Jones-Drew are all players I like, but the choice came down to Jimmy Graham and Brees.  I took Brees in the end because he was the number 1 player in Fantasy last year, I believe the Saints are due for a bounce back year with Coach Sean Payton back at the helm, and most importantly: I’m a Saints fan and I never get Drew Brees on my team.  I just had to think with my heart for once.  =)
Round 3
25 Maurice Jones-Drew, Jac RB The Besaid Aurochs
26 Larry Fitzgerald, Ari WR
ARRGAN IISOU
27 Andre Johnson, Hou WR
Zombie Black Bears
28 Vincent Jackson, TB WR
Mars Space Cowboys
29 Randall Cobb, GB WR Cydonia Chryssalids
30 Chris Johnson, Ten RB NJ Fear Boners
31 DeMarco Murray, Dal RB
Hoboken Dread Pirates
32 Cam Newton, Car QB Soldier’s Peak Wardens
33 Wes Welker, Den WR
Citadel Spectres
34 Peyton Manning, Den QB
Scottish Highlanders
35 Frank Gore, SF RB Hopped Up Titans
36 Marques Colston, NO WR Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • Murray is talented, but this is an all too familiar scene for himHoboken Dread Pirates | DeMarco Murray, Dal RB – OK I don’t mean to pile on Chris but I just personally do not like the Murray pick here.  This feels like desperation, as Chris probably said, “Shit, I still don’t have a RB!”  I just think there were better options on the table.  Reggie Bush would have been a much better option here as he is poised to have a huge year in Detroit.  Hell, I would have even accepted Frank Gore just because of his consistency over the last two years.  Murray has talent, no one can doubt that, but he is such a high injury risk that it makes me really nervous.  If Murray can play all 16 games this year, then this is a brilliant pick.  I just don’t see that happening.

Picks I Loved:

  • The Besaid Aurochs | Maurice Jones-Drew, Jac RB – Having owned MJD last year, I am fully aware of how shitty it was.  MJD held out to get a new contract, failed, came back to the team late in the pre-season, and almost immediately got injured and just couldn’t recover at any point all year.  So why do I love this pick?  Because we are only two seasons removed from MJD leading the NFL in rushing.  Last year was the first time in his entire career when MJD was really injured.  He’s actually quite durable if you look back.  Finally, even though he plays on shitty Jacksonville, he still manages to be a fantasy stud.  I think he’s in for a big year, and combine him with Katie’s first pick of Adrian Peterson, and it’s going to be a great fantasy year.
  • All Cam Newton does is put up fantasy points. Deal with itSoldier’s Peak Wardens | Cam Newton, Car QB – I can’t like this pick enough.  For some reason, in the drafts that I have done this year whether they be live or mock, people seem to think Cam Newton is diseased or something.  I just don’t get it, the guy is a total beast!  He’s a good pocket passer, and he is an amazing runner.  Do you know who the goal line running back is for the Carolina Panthers?  It’s Cam Newton!  He is consistent enough to be a Fantasy QB before you even factor in his rushing touchdowns.  Once you do factor those in, he has gigantic upside that is tough to beat.

Pick I Made:

  • Wes Welker, Den WR – Going to be super honest here … I don’t love this pick.  Welker as my number 1 WR doesn’t fill me with confidence.  This isn’t a PPR league so his high volume of catches doesn’t help me, and he has never been known as a touchdown guy.  I just liked him a bit more than the other options at WR still on the board.  Victor Cruz and Reggie Wayne were the people I was most looking at, but Welker generally gets way more targets, and the more targets you get, the more chances you can make something big happen.  I’d rather take my chances with that logic than hope for big yardage / touchdowns on only a few targets.
Round 4
37 Matt Ryan, Atl QB Lunaris Robunnys
38 Victor Cruz, NYG WR Hopped Up Titan
39 Montee Ball, Den RB Scottish Highlanders
40 Darren Sproles, NO RB Citadel Spectres
41 Reggie Wayne, Ind WR Soldier’s Peak Wardens
42 Colin Kaepernick, SF QB Hoboken Dread Pirates
43 Mike Wallace, Mia WR NJ Fear Boners
44 Reggie Bush, Det RB Cydonia Chryssalids
45 Danny Amendola, NE WR Mars Space Cowboys
46 David Wilson, NYG RB Zombie Black Bears
47 Darren McFadden, Oak RB ARRGAN IISOU
48 Robert Griffin III, Was QB The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • "You think I'm as good as Ben Roethlisberger?! That's a funny joke Mike!"NJ Fear Boners | Mike Wallace, Mia WR – I personally am a Mike Wallace fan.  I think he’s exciting to watch, and man is he fast.  That being said, in terms of Fantasy production, I think MZ and the Fear Boners could have done a lot better.  Dwayne Bowe, James Jones, or even Pierre Garcon would have been better options in my opinion.  This is based solely on the fact that Wallace doesn’t have Roethlisberger throwing to him anymore.  If Wallace had a great or elite QB throwing to him, I would like the pick better.  As it is though, Wallace chased the money to Miami and is stuck with Ryan Tannehill who is decent at best.
  • ARRGAN IISOU | Darren McFadden, Oak RB – The good thing here, is that Jimmy didn’t reach for McFadden a round or two early.  That being said, I just don’t like the pick and it is for not analytic reason.  McFadden is just fool’s gold.  He’ll looking amazing for a few weeks, and then he’ll crash and burn.  You can’t trust McFadden to play an entire season, and so this feels like a wasted pick.

Picks I Loved:

  • Cydonia Chryssalids | Reggie Bush, Det RB – We all had the chance to get him, and we just didn’t think about it.  I don’t know why we slept on Reggie Bush for this long, but man what a great pick.  That gives the Paul and the Chryssalids a RB combination of Doug Martin and Reggie Bush … that’s just fantastic!  The only worry, which is why Bush is down this far, is that if the Lions use him too much, he could wear down and get injured.

Pick I Made:

  • He may be tiny, but Sproles is still well above any other running back on the Saints depth chartDarren Sproles, NO RB – This might seem to be another pick of me over-valuing a Saints player because they are my favorite team.  You’d actually be completely correct if you thought that.  I once again took someone who is better suited for a PPR format, and did it over Reggie Bush who was still on the board.  In a theme that should surprise no one, I feel like Sproles is more consistent.  I know what I’m going to get from him.  Sure, Bush could and probably will have some huge games that will make this pick look silly.  But as I was looking at my team, I just wanted the constant 10-12 points that I’m sure Sproles can give me each week.
Round 5
49 Dwayne Bowe, KC WR The Besaid Aurochs
50 James Jones, GB WR ARRGAN IISOU
51 Steve Smith, Car WR Zombie Black Bears
52 Eddie Lacy, GB RB Mars Space Cowboys
53 Eric Decker, Den WR Cydonia Chryssalids
54 Matthew Stafford, Det QB NJ Fear Boners
55 Hakeem Nicks, NYG WR Hoboken Dread Pirates
56 Giovani Bernard, Cin RB Soldier’s Peak Wardens
57 Chris Ivory, NYJ RB Citadel Spectres
58 Miles Austin, Dal WR Scottish Highlanders
59 Tony Gonzalez, Atl TE Hopped Up Titans
60 Lamar Miller, Mia RB Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • Those are some fucked up teeth ...Scottish Highlanders | Miles Austin, Dal WR – Miles Austin used to be the top dog in the Dallas Cowboys offense, but with the emergence of Dez Bryant, and Jason Witten being Tony Romo’s favorite security blanket, Austin’s value has taken a bit of a hit.  I think if Sam was to get Austin as a Flex starter, it would be a brilliant pick.  Unfortunately, this is Sam’s WR2 and I just don’t like look.
  • Cydonia Chryssalids | Eric Decker, Den WR – Eh … there’s nothing inherently wrong with this pick, I just don’t like the idea of taking a team’s third wide receiver to be your WR2.  With the Chryssalids strength at RB, TE, and with Randall Cobb already at WR1, I would have gone for a quarterback at this position.

Picks I Loved:

  • Straight derping!NJ Fear Boners | Matthew Stafford, Det QB – Stafford threw over 700 times last year.  He got tons of yards, but just couldn’t make touchdowns happen.  To be fair though, it really wasn’t his fault!  There was something like 20+ times where a Lions receiver got tackled within five yards of the end zone.  That includes 3-5 times when Calvin Johnson was tackled on the 1 yard line.  If a few more things went his way, Stafford would have had a monster year.  I think the bad luck ends this year.

Pick I Made:

  • Chris Ivory, NYJ RB – Hey I drafted a former Saint player instead of a current one!  I’m getting better!  I’m actually happy with this selection because as bad as the Jets were, and man were they bad, Shonne Green last year was a top 15 running back.  News flash, Shonne Green is terrible and Ivory is way better.  I think it’s going to be a solid year for him and as a Flex, that’s great value.
Round 6
61 Ryan Mathews, SD RB Lunaris Robunnys
62 Russell Wilson, Sea QB
Hopped Up Titan
63 Ahmad Bradshaw, Ind RB Scottish Highlanders
64 Jordy Nelson, GB WR Citadel Spectres
65 Sidney Rice, Sea WR Soldier’s Peak Wardens
66 BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Cin RB Hoboken Dread Pirates
67 Torrey Smith, Bal WR NJ Fear Boners
68 Andrew Luck, Ind QB Cydonia Chryssalids
69 Tony Romo, Dal QB Mars Space Cowboys
70 Pierre Garcon, Wsh WR Zombie Black Bears
71 Jason Witten, Dal TE ARRGAN IISOU
72 Rob Gronkowski, NE TE The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • Can Luck stay one step ahead of the competition this year? Cydonia Chryssalids | Andrew Luck, Ind QB – This isn’t something that would seem to be a bad move initially.  After all, Luck had a fantastic rookie year, leading the Colts to the playoffs.  Yet, despite all of that, something just doesn’t feel right about Luck’s Fantasy prospects this year.  The Colts changed offensive coordinators and they will be using a West Coast style, which emphasizes shorter / faster passes.  So his interceptions are likely to go down, but his touchdowns may stay the same or go down slightly.  In addition, Luck also got 5 rushing TDs last year, and I doubt he can replicate that again.  Finally, Colts had a very easy schedule last year, and this year that’s not the case.  Luck might have a decent year, but I don’t think the Fantasy production will be there.

Picks I Loved:

  • He does get injured, but man Gronk is such a great player ... Also that defender is sadThe Besaid Aurochs | Rob Gronkowski, NE TE – We know that Gronkowski is likely to miss some time this year.  The Patriots are notoriously tight lipped about how their players are doing with injuries.  All of that is true, but let’s remember who we are talking about here.  Rob Gronkowski has the talent to be at least the second best Fantasy tight end, if not the best.  If / when he comes back, it’s possible that he has some big games.  Getting him in the sixth round, is a steal.  Katie and the Aurochs can stash him on the bench for a bit, and then use a regular tight end for a while.  If Gronk plays, great!  If he doesn’t, well you didn’t give up much to get him so no harm done.
  • Lunaris Robunnys | Ryan Mathews, SD RB – Let’s get one thing straight … Ryan Mathews sucks as an NFL running back.  He gets injured all the time, and San Diego is fast on it’s way to hit rock bottom as a franchise.  So why do I like this pick for Yogi and the Robunnys?  Yogi already had CJ Spiller and Lamar Miller as his RB 1 & 2, so Mathews would fit into his Flex.  As bad as Matthews has been in the past, he’s still the starting running back for an NFL team, so he’ll have ample opportunity to score points.  While he may not be good as a high end RB, as a Flex he seems like a bargain.

Pick I Made:

  • Jordy Nelson, GB WR – Nelson had a really bad 2012 season.  He was injured for most of it, and because of that Randall Cobb and James Jones got a bigger portion of attention from Aaron Rodgers.  So why did I take Nelson?  All the reports are now coming out that he is healthy once again, and this is the same guy that two years ago had 15 TDs.  Nelson has upside to be a Top-10 wide receiver, so me putting him in as a WR2 isn’t that terrible of a move.
Round 7
73 DeSean Jackson, Phi WR The Besaid Aurochs
74 Antonio Brown, Pit WR ARRGAN IISOU
75 Mark Ingram, NO RB Zombie Black Bears
76 Cecil Shorts, Jac WR Mars Space Cowboys
77 Steve Johnson, Buf WR Cydonia Chryssalids
78 Owen Daniels, Hou TE NJ Fear Boners
79 Greg Olsen, Car TE Hoboken Dread Pirates
80 Vernon Davis, SF TE Soldier’s Peak Wardens
81 Tavon Austin, Stl WR Citadel Spectres
82 Greg Jennings, Min WR Scottish Highlanders
83 Anquan Boldin, SF WR Hopped Up Titans
84 Jermichael Finley, GB TE Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • HOW CAN YOU NOT CATCH THE BALL AGAINST THE SAINTS DEFENSE?!?!?!Soldier’s Peak Wardens | Vernon Davis, SF TE – When Alex Smith was the quarterback for the 49ers, Davis got all the looks.  He was pretty much the only person that Smith trusted with the ball.  Conversely, whenever I watched Kaepernick as the QB, he would target a wide receiver, specifically Michael Crabtree.  With Crabtree out for the majority of the year, perhaps Davis will come back into favor, but I just don’t have a good feeling about it.

Picks I Loved:

  • Hoboken Dread Pirates | Greg Olsen, Car TE – Hey I’m finally complimenting Chris and the Dread Pirates!  Cam Newton has improved as a pocket passer, but Steve Smith still gets double teamed a lot of the time.  Because of that, the second favorite target on the Panthers is Greg Olsen.  He has the potential to be a Top 5 and maybe even a  Top 3 tight end in Fantasy.
  • Scottish Highlanders | Greg Jennings, Min WR – A lot has been made about how Jennings has left the green pastures of Aaron Rodgers throwing to him, to the dumps that is the Vikings and Christian Ponder.  I think that’s a little bit overblown.  Percy Harvin did just fine with Ponder, and that was in large part due to the fact that defenses have to spend a lot of attention on Adrian Peterson.  I think Jennings will do well being the number 1 wide receiver again, and Ponder will be able to get him the ball.

Pick I Made:

  • I'm excited to see if Austin can audjust to the pro gameTavon Austin, Stl WR – As I have mentioned above, I didn’t do a great job at picking up wide receivers.  So because of that, time to take some risks and draft some high upside players.  It was with that in mind, I went with the rookie Tavon Austin.  He has the talent to be a great player, even if his quarterback is Sam Bradford.  The thing that has me hopeful is that this will be coach Jeff Fisher’s second year in St. Louis and I expect a decent year out of the Rams.  I think Austin can certainly help with that move upwards.
Round 8
85 Lance Moore, NO WR Lunaris Robunnys
86 Andre Brown, NYG RB Hopped Up Titan
87 Kyle Rudolph, Min TE Scottish Highlanders
88 T.Y. Hilton, Ind WR Citadel Spectres
89 Josh Gordon, Cle WR Soldier’s Peak Wardens
90 Rashard Mendenhall, Ari RB Hoboken Dread Pirates
91 Emmanuel Sanders, Pit WR NJ Fear Boners
92 Mike Williams, TB WR Cydonia Chryssalids
93 DeAngelo Williams, Car RB Mars Space Cowboys
94 Jared Cook, Stl TE Zombie Black Bears
95 Golden Tate, Sea WR ARRGAN IISOU
96 Daryl Richardson, Stl RB The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • Great stat lines there DeAngelo ...Mars Space Cowboys | DeAngelo Williams, Car RB -Pedro wasn’t at the draft to pick the players for his Space Cowboys.  So the entire thing was autodrafted for him by the ESPN servers.  I get all of that.  I still just have to throw out this note about how much I hate DeAngelo Williams.  I have no rational reason to hate Williams so much at this point in the draft.  Getting the “number 1” running back for a NFL team in the 8th round is great value.  That is true if Williams was the actually number 1 RB.  The real, top running back in Carolina is actually Cam Newton.  I’ve just been burned by Williams far too often, and I pretty much think he should never be drafted … ever.

Picks I Loved:

  • Hoboken Dread Pirates | Rashard Mendenhall, Ari RB – Rashard Mendenhall isn’t a super amazing player.  He isn’t someone that when you draft him, the entire room won’t go “oh shit nice pick!”  That being said though, Mendenhall isn’t too far removed from being considered a top running back in the league.  While he isn’t in Pittsburgh anymore, former offensive coordinator of the Steelers is now in Arizona.  So Mendenhall is going to comfortable and in an offensive system he knows.  I think he’ll do well this year, definitely as a Flex but could move up to a RB2 in terms of quality.

As demonstrated here, TY Hilton is really fast and really goodPick I Made:

  • T.Y. Hilton, Ind WR – Continuing my run on wide receivers with upside, I was ecstatic to get Hilton in the 8th round.  Last year during his rookie season, he showed that he had tremendous speed and the ability to catch the deep ball from Andrew Luck.  If he can improve just a little bit, and get more than the 2-3 catches he averaged, he’ll have a huge season and move up to being Flex worth to potentially WR2.  Very good value to get halfway through the draft.
Round 9
97 Ben Roethlisberger, Pit QB The Besaid Aurochs
98 Eli Manning, NYG QB ARRGAN IISOU
99 49ers D/ST, D/ST Zombie Black Bears
100 Shane Vereen, NE RB Mars Space Cowboys
101 Bears D/ST, D/ST Cydonia Chryssalids
102 Seahawks D/ST, D/ST NJ Fear Boners
103 Vick Ballard, Ind RB Hoboken Dread Pirates
104 Matt Schaub, Hou QB Soldier’s Peak Wardens
105 Brandon Myers, NYG TE Citadel Spectres
106 Andy Dalton, Cin QB Scottish Highlanders
107 Ronnie Hillman, Den RB Hopped Up Titans
108 Broncos D/ST, D/ST Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • The Besaid Aurochs | Ben Roethlisberger, Pit QB – When Katie took RGIII as her main quarterback, I knew that she would have to take a backup QB just to be safe.  IF something happened to RGIII where he was going to miss any significant amount of time, you would want a solid and reliable backup.  Big Ben obviously has the talent, but he always gets hurt!  Why would you take another injury prone QB as a backup?!  I just don’t get it.  I would’ve much preferred Katie taking any of the other backups that were taken in this round.
  • Only a man on drugs would wear those glassesLunaris Robunnys | Broncos D/ST, D/ST – Denver obviously had a fantastic defense last year, but I’m worried about their potential for this upcoming season.  Von Miller is out serving a six game suspension for some sort of drug related incident, and Elvis Dumervil left in the off-season.  For a defense that really relies heavily on rushing the quarterback, they sure lost two great pass rushers!  I think they regress and become a bit more average this year.  On the plus side, they do play the Chargers and the Raiders twice each!

Picks I Loved:

  • Nothing stands out a ton to me here.  I think everyone did fine with people gunning for backup QBs and defenses.  Ronnie Hillman going to the Hopped Up Titans is decent, but with the news coming out of Denver and the whole clusterfuck of running back issues they have, that might not end up being such a steal.

I believe this is a direct quote from Eli ManningPick I Made:

  • Brandon Myers, NYG TE – I missed out on all the other top flight tight ends, and after that all the players are pretty much the same in terms of quality.  I went with Myers because early on, Eli Manning has a tendency to favor throwing to the tight end.  I don’t know what it is, but in an effort to get comfortable with the offense, it just seems like Eli will throw to his security blanket of a tight end.  Later on in the season, well that’s anyone’s guess, but at least initially I think I can get some good games out of Myers.  After that I’m hoping another TE will swing on in for me to pick up and replace with.
Round 10
109 Chris Givens, Stl WR Lunaris Robunnys
110 Bryce Brown, Phi RB Hopped Up Titan
111 Denarius Moore, Oak WR Scottish Highlanders
112 Michael Floyd, Ari WR Citadel Spectres
113 Bengals D/ST, D/ST Soldier’s Peak Wardens
114 Texans D/ST, D/ST Hoboken Dread Pirates
115 Ben Tate, Hou RB NJ Fear Boners
116 Isaiah Pead, Stl RB Cydonia Chryssalids
117 Antonio Gates, SD TE Mars Space Cowboys
118 Joe Flacco, Bal QB Zombie Black Bears
119 Isaac Redman, Pit RB ARRGAN IISOU
120 Steelers D/ST, D/ST The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, the highest paid QB in the NFL, Joe Flacco!Zombie Black Bears | Joe Flacco, Bal QB – If you want to get a backup QB, then that’s fine.  Just don’t get Flacco.  Not only is he a terrible and inconsistent regular season quarterback, who the hell is he throwing the ball to?  Torrey Smith?  Unlikely.  Flacco is at his best throwing screen passes to Ray Rice and chucking it to his tight end.  With Dennis Pitta out for the year, and Anquain Boldin gone, I think Flacco is in for another maddening year.  On the plus side, Kristen should never have to play him.
  • Mars Space Cowboys | Antonio Gates, SD TE – Again, I know Pedro was on autodraft but blech!  When was the last time Antonio Gates was even remotely relevant?  Even if you were to believe that Gates still has something left in the tank, he still has Philip Rivers throwing to him, and that just isn’t a good thing anymore.  Don’t be surprised if the Space Cowboys drop Gates half way through the season.

Picks I Loved:

  • Lunaris Robunnys | Chris Givens, Stl WR – Little known fact:  Chris Givens is a really great player.  He is poised to have a stellar year, especially if Tavon Austin can perform and divert some of the defense’s attention.  Do not be surprised if Givens eventually becomes a solid WR2.  Amazing value getting him in the 10th.
  • Ben Tate & Arian Foster can both be productive with the TexansNJ Fear Boners | Ben Tate, Hou RB – Tate is the best of the backup running backs.  No questions about it.  If anything were to happen to Arian Foster, and that’s entirely possible given how much the Texans have overused him the last few years, then Tate has the ability to step right in and make plays.  For now Tate is still the backup, but being able to get someone with RB1 talent this late in the draft, is fantastic.  good job to MZ for going after him.

Pick I Made:

  • Michael Floyd, Ari WR – I actually don’t remember making this pick.  Maybe I blacked out or something.  Well uhh … I’m not in love with the pick but here’s the hope with it.  The hope is that Floyd did so bad last year because 1) he’s a rookie and 2) the Cardinals had historically bad quarterback play.  If they can get decent work out of Carson Palmer, that should open things up for Larry Fitzgerald.  Since defenses will actually have to defend Fitzgerald again, maybe that means an increase in work from Floyd.  I don’t know if that will happen, but that’s the hope.
Round 11
121 Le’Veon Bell, Pit RB The Besaid Aurochs
122 Buccaneers D/ST, D/ST ARRGAN IISOU
123 Kenny Britt, Ten WR Zombie Black Bears
124 Vincent Brown, SD WR Mars Space Cowboys
125 Shonn Greene, Ten RB Cydonia Chryssalids
126 Jacquizz Rodgers, Atl RB NJ Fear Boners
127 Michael Bush, Chi RB Hoboken Dread Pirates
128 Blair Walsh, Min K Soldier’s Peak Wardens
129 Bernard Pierce, Bal RB Citadel Spectres
130 Brandon Pettigrew, Det TE Scottish Highlanders
131 Rams D/ST, D/ST Hopped Up Titans
132 Mikel Leshoure, Det RB Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • Jacquizz Rodgers can't take too many of these kinds of hitsNJ Fear Boners | Jacquizz Rodgers, Alt RB – Meh, I’m just not impressed with the pick.  I think there are other backup running backs that you could take here that have more upside.  Rodgers is a good change of pace football player, that can definitely make a difference in actual football.  In Fantasy though, he just doesn’t get enough work to be viable.  Even if Steven Jackson were to get injured, it’s not like Rodgers would get the starting job.  He’s just not strong enough for that increased workload.  I don’t think he’s startable in any scenario.

Picks I Loved:

  • Hopped Up Titans | Rams D/ST, D/ST – I’m actually a big fan of this pick up.  The Rams have solid players on defense, and are well coached.  While it may seem like a bad pick since they are in the same division as the 49ers, Seahawks, and Cardinals it’s actually a decent thing.  The 49ers and Seahawks don’t have great offenses to begin with, and they have some key injuries to some of their skill positions so they might score less than expected.  While the Cardinals have the potential for a good offense, they also have Carson Palmer who loves to force throws and give up tons of interceptions.  Could be a solid defense for Scott!
  • Britt has the talent, he just needs to focus and have some good luckZombie Black Bears | Kenny Britt, Ten WR – Britt has a ton of talent, and he seems to finally be getting healthy after a slew of injuries and suspensions.  The problem always tends to be that Nate Washington always steals more catches than he should, and the quarterback position for the Titans is an issue.  With an improved offensive line and a potential Chris Johnson resurgence, Britt may get good opportunities for one on one coverage, and a chance for big plays.

Pick I Made:

  • Bernard Pierce, Bal RB – Not a whole ton of analysis needed for this pick.  Since I took Ray Rice, I took Pierce as a handcuff.  Just in case something weird happens to Rice and he gets injured, I’ll be covered and have Rice’s very talented backup in Pierce.
Round 12
133 Stephen Gostkowski, NE K Lunaris Robunnys
134 Matt Bryant, Atl K Hopped Up Titan
135 Rueben Randle, NYG WR Scottish Highlanders
136 Michael Vick, Phi QB Citadel Spectres
137 Kendall Wright, Ten WR Soldier’s Peak Wardens
138 Matt Prater, Den K Hoboken Dread Pirates
139 Sam Bradford, Stl QB NJ Fear Boners
140 Martellus Bennett, Chi TE Cydonia Chryssalids
141 Jonathan Stewart, Car RB Mars Space Cowboys
142 Phil Dawson, SF K Zombie Black Bears
143 Justin Tucker, Bal K ARRGAN IISOU
144 Jordan Cameron, Cle TE The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • "Hate to tell you this now Jon, but we're giving all your carries to Cam."Mars Space Cowboys | Jonathan Stewart, Car RB HAHAHAHAHA!  Let me follow up that terrible pick of DeAngelo Williams with an even worse pickup of Jonathn Stewart.  I really laughed at this point.  Excusable because it was autopicked, but still really bad!

Picks I Loved:

  • Scottish Highlanders | Rueben Randle, NYG WR – Randle actually has a lot of talent, and with the amount of injuries that happen to Hakeem Nicks during a season, it’s conceivable that Randle will get more start time for the Giants.  I could see him having a season in which he can be a very solid Flex.  Not seeing him be as good as a WR2, but Flex is definitely possible.

Pick I Made:

  • If he can stay healthy, which seems impossible, Vick could be a Top 5 Fantasy Football playerMichael Vick, Phi QB – I usually hate to draft two QBs.  I mean I just don’t get the point of doing it.  Why waste a roster spot on a QB who is going to potentially play only one week for you when your main starter is on bye?  You could just as easily pick up a QB when you need to and forget about it.  So why did I pick up Vick?  I’m kind of hoping that he has a really good start to the season, and maybe I can then offer him up as a trade asset.  If he flounders and / or gets injured, then no harm done.  I’ll just pick up someone later on in the year.
Round 13
145 Pierre Thomas, NO RB The Besaid Aurochs
146 Jermaine Gresham, Cin TE ARRGAN IISOU
147 Bilal Powell, NYJ RB Zombie Black Bears
148 Fred Jackson, Buf RB Mars Space Cowboys
149 Patriots D/ST, D/ST Cydonia Chryssalids
150 Sebastian Janikowski, Oak K NJ Fear Boners
151 Jay Cutler, Chi QB Hoboken Dread Pirates
152 Brian Hartline, Mia WR Soldier’s Peak Wardens
153 Justin Blackmon, Jac WR Citadel Spectres
154 Robert Turbin, Sea RB Scottish Highlanders
155 Jonathan Dwyer, Pit RB Hopped Up Titans
156 Alshon Jeffery, Chi WR Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • "Ha! That other guy thought I was going to throw him the ball. Can you believe that Brandon?!"Lunaris Robunnys | Alshon Jeffery, Chi WR – Absolute waste of a pick.  Jay Cutler of the Bears is physically incapable of throwing the ball or looking at anyone other than Brandon Marshall.  No other Bears wide receiver will be viable in a Fantasy setting.

Picks I Loved:

  • Cydonia Chryssalids | Patriots D/ST, D/ST – The Patriots gets to play the Jets, Dolphins and Bills twice each during the year.  Six games against those bad offenses is going to be a huge boon.  What’s not to like?

Pick I Made:

  • Blackmon just needs to stop getting arrested so much ...Justin Blackmon, Jac WR – Same kind of theme here as the last few rounds.  I want wide receivers with potential and Blackmon has that.  The reason you get him so late in drafts is because he’s going to be suspended for the first four weeks of the year.  While that sucks, it could be a really big boon later on in the season.  From my standpoint, if I can draft a player that is at least WR2 or Flex worthy, and I know that he’s going to be uninjured by Week 5 of the season, that’s a big deal.  Gives me a lot of potential when teams start hitting bye weeks.
Round 14
157 Philip Rivers, SD QB Lunaris Robunnys
158 Kenbrell Thompkins, NE WR Hopped Up Titan
159 Gregg Little, Cle WR Scottish Highlanders
160 Browns D/ST, D/ST Citadel Spectres
161 Fred Davis, Wsh TE Soldier’s Peak Wardens
162 Danny Woodhead, SD RB Hoboken Dread Pirates
163 Ravens D/ST, D/ST NJ Fear Boners
164 Randy Bullock, Hou K Cydonia Chryssalids
165 Malcom Floyd, SD WR Mars Space Cowboys
166 Ryan Broyles, Det WR Zombie Black Bears
167 Roy Helu, Wsh RB ARRGAN IISOU
168 David Akers, Det K The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • Lunaris Robunnys | Philip Rivers, SD QB – The old day where Philip Rivers went all PHILIP RIVERS sure seem long ago.  I don’t mind taking a backup QB, but man what a bad person to pick as your backup.  I would have rather seen Carson Palmer, EJ Manuel, Alex Smith, or even Josh Freeman in this spot.
  • The Besaid Aurochs | David Akers, Det K – I always say that all the kickers are the same.  That was before I saw the horrid performance from David Akers last year when he was playing for the San Francisco 49ers.  Now don’t get me wrong, in 2011 and before, Akers was the fucking man.  He would hit close to 90% of all the Field Goals he would attempt.  Also remember that kicking in San Francisco is really hard, as the wind will swirl and do odd things to your kicks.  Akers moves into a dome this year with Detroit, but I worry that his confidence is completely shattered.  I would’ve stayed away.

Picks I Loved:

  • Hoboken Dread Pirates | Danny Woodhead, SD RB – Chris loves to draft Danny Woodhead in almost any league that he can.  It’s tough to argue with the upside here.  Woodhead just has the ability to move the chains and get first downs.  That ability is going to be invaluable in San Diego as they just don’t have as many good playmakers.  I don’t think Woodhead is going to become one of the best Fantasy RBs in the league, but it’s possible he becomes a steady 6-8 points a week, with the upside of 14-16 if he scores a TD.  Hey sign me up, that’s a great Flex player if you can get them in the 14th round.

Pick I Made:

  • Browns D/ST, D/ST – I don’t care about kickers, and I don’t care about defenses.  I’d rather just play matchups throughout the year, and draft a bunch of promising players that have potential upside.  Ray Horton, who was defensive coordinator for last year’s Arizona Cardinals team who surprised many, is now in charge in Cleveland and I think the change over to the 3-4 is very promising.  They also were able to sign Paul Kruger in the offseason from the Ravens, and he is a really fantastic pass rusher.  I’m not saying they are going to be the best in the league, but with a bunch of good young pieces, and playing in a lower scoring division, I think this could be a solid pick.
Round 15
169 DeAndre Hopkins, Hou WR The Besaid Aurochs
170 Andre Roberts, Ari WR ARRGAN IISOU
171 Julius Thomas, Den TE Zombie Black Bears
172 Packers D/ST, D/ST Mars Space Cowboys
173 Carson Palmer, Ari QB Cydonia Chryssalids
174 Darrius Heyward-Bey, Ind WR NJ Fear Boners
175 Andrew Hawkins, Cin WR Hoboken Dread Pirates
176 Daniel Thomas, Mia RB Soldier’s Peak Wardens
177 Zach Sudfeld, NE TE Citadel Spectres
178 Falcons D/ST, D/ST Scottish Highlanders
179 Mike Tolbert, Car RB Hopped Up Titans
180 Brent Celek, Phi TE Lunaris Robunnys

Picks I Disliked:

  • "How man times do we have to play the Saints, Panthers and Bucs?! Oh shit man ..."Scottish Highlanders | Falcons D/ST, D/ST – The Falcons play in the same division as the Saints, Panthers and Buccaneers.  I want no part of their defense.  =P

Picks I Loved:

  • NJ Fear Boners | Darrius Heyward-Bey, Ind WR – Heyward-Bey is currently slated to be the second wide receiver on the field for the Colts, opposite Reggie Wayne.  Everyone is talking up TY Hilton as a sleeper, and rightfully so, but there will still be room for Heyward-Bey to get a lot of targets.  He did well with the Raiders last year playing with crappy Carson Palmer.  Imagine what he can do with Andrew Luck?

Pick I Made:

  • Zach Sudfeld, NE TE – While Gronkowski likely misses some games early on in the season, undrafted rookie Zach Sudfeld is likely to get a lot of playing time.  He’s 6’7″ and is a really good pass catcher, and has been getting a lot of play in the preseason.  The Patriots have the most passes to a tight end over the last few years, so he’ll definitely get a chance to prove himself.  Getting him in the 15th round just makes it a supreme value.
Round 16
181 Christine Michael, Sea RB Lunaris Robunnys
182 Marcel Reece, Oak RB Hopped Up Titan
183 Greg Zuerlein, Stl K Scottish Highlanders
184 Dan Bailey, Dal K Citadel Spectres
185 Percy Harvin, Sea WR Soldier’s Peak Wardens
186 Julian Edelman, NE WR Hoboken Dread Pirates
187 Justin Forsett, Jac RB NJ Fear Boners
188 Austin Collie, SF WR Cydonia Chryssalids
189 Josh Brown, NYG K Mars Space Cowboys
190 Jeremy Kerley, NYJ WR Zombie Black Bears
191 Michael Turner, FA RB ARRGAN IISOU
192 Jacoby Jones, Bal WR The Besaid Aurochs

Picks I Disliked:

  • Might be the most you see Percy Harvin in a Seahawks uniform all seasonSoldier’s Peak Wardens | Percy Harvin, Sea WR – I get what Mike from the Wardens is trying to do.  I really do.  Harvin is injured right now, but he might come back later in the year and he’s so talented that he’ll have a star.  The issue though is in the timing.  Harvin is going to start off the season on the PUP list (Physically Unable to Perform).  That means he can’t play in the first six games.  OK, that sucks but still has potential.  Expect, given the timeline for Harvin’s hip surgery, would put the absolute earliest he could come back at about Week 10.  Let’s assume it’s not the earliest, and that he is ready to play in Week 11.  The Seahawks have a bye week in Week 12 so why would they make him play Week 11?  They would be better off letting him rest until Week 13.  Well, Week 13 starts Fantasy playoffs, so you will never feel confident starting him then if you make the playoffs.  Just not worth the draft pick.

Picks I Loved:

  • This is why you draft Marcel ReeceHopped Up Titans | Marcel Reece, Oak RB – When Darren McFadden goes down to injury, and he most certainly will do that, Marcel Reece is going to be the one that picks up the slack.  He’s actually a pretty good player who has made the most out of his opportunities to start.  I think this has the potential to be a Flex worthy player for Scott and the Titans.  Great value to get in the final round!

Pick I Made:

  • Dan Bailey, Dal K – Welp I needed a kicker, so might as well take whoever was around in the final round.  I don’t care which kicker I get, as I have said previously, the difference between the best kicker in the league and the average isn’t much.  Bailey does play in Dallas though and the Cowboys usually score quite a bit.  Could be a good chunk of opportunities for him to score.

  1. Well I can’t be upset if I managed to not do anything terrible and had a couple of good picks 🙂

I think it really helped that this was my second real draft of the year and I picked in a similar position in both. I felt like I knew who was going be gone if I waited and who would be around a bit longer than might be expected. I think it also helps that I’ve played a couple years with all of you and have a little bit of a feel for your biases.

What I really want now is for stats to start being filled in so I can really plan for week one.

    • Oh man did I not make fun of you for any picks? OK I don’t like Frank Gore. There … take that =P

The stats will probably be filled in on Tuesday. I should have my predictions up by Wednesday.

      • Actually I am a bit afraid of Gore as well. He is old. That said he is going to have to run a LOT until SF gets some receivers to throw to and they already ran a lot.

  2. A fair assessment. I don’t love my handcuffed, as much I don’t love my other picks. I do like the rest of what the auto draft did for me. Including the combination I have at the RB spot for my starters. Though, as you pointed out I don’t love my hand-cuffed Carolina Panthers. But, they have had great seasons in the past, you never know. Also, I think for to be fair there is going to be some great things out Brandon Meyers. I think the best pick up overall though, was the Reggie Bush pick. Didn’t go to high, and I think playing in Detroit will give him a ton of points. I see him moving into the top 20 of scorers if he stays healthy. Look at poor forgotten Jahvid Best.

  3. I’m actually really happy with my team. I knew I was going to get flack for Flacco, but he’s been a solid backup for me before. Yeah, the receiving corps isn’t as solid, but he was still a better choice than most of what was left in the QB pool at the time. I have quarterback anxiety, and had a hard time not drafting a third, so it’s sort of a good middle ground for me. ZOMBIE BLACK BEARS GONNA SHRED IT UP THIS YEAR!

  4. Make fun of the Harvin pick all you want, but I didn’t really care who I picked in that round, so I went with a personal pick over what may have been the best. He’ll ride my bench for most if not all of the season, but I still like him, so I drafted him. He’s like my mascot!

  5. My favourite part in all of this is the assumption that any of my picks had a shred of forethought involved. I’m lucky I managed to get away with one disliked pick.

BUT I’LL STILL PROVE YOU WRONG JERKWEED!
