g33kBowl Week 5 Predictions

Submitted by on October 6, 2011 – 1:29 PM23 Comments

It’s Week 5 here at the g33kBowl League and it’s tough to see what is going to happen in the future.  We have a lot of 2-2 teams, and even a lot of the 3-1 teams are starting to get hit with some injuries that may make them start to falter as the season goes on.

Usually by Week 8 you know who the great teams in a league are.  The teams that will go onto the Playoffs and fight for the top spots of the championship.  Unfortunately that means that Weeks 5-7 are kinda boring.  Only because everyone is kinda right on top of each other in the standings and we just don’t have teams that have broken away from the pack yet.  Because of that, my analysis may seem a bit short and curt this week.  It can’t be helped, there’s only so much I can say during Week 5.

The interesting part about this part of the year is that this is the first time during the season that we have Bye Weeks.  These are weeks where certain football teams are not playing and resting up.  That means that for some Fantasy teams, their star players are off and now they scramble to find replacements.  So not only do you have to worry about injuries, but now also Bye Weeks.  Pretty crazy eh?

My advice for this week?  Take Risks.

The two things I talked about, injuries and Bye Weeks make for some wonky shit during games.  You have unproven rookies, guys signed to 10 day contracts, people who were originally injured but are now back in the lineup replacing another injured dude.  This is a very crazy season and these are crazy days we live in.  Therefore, don’t be afraid to take a risk and go for a home run shot, especially if things are bleak.

Sure, you could start that RB who you know will get you 4-5 points.  That’s fine I suppose.  Or, you could take a flyer on some guy that has the potential to score 15 points, but could also get 0-2.  If you look at it that way, what’s the worst that happens?  You start a guy who gets you 0 points, instead of the guy who would have gotten you 5 points.  Yes, sometimes 5 points is the difference between winning and losing.  Yet here we are in a 14 team league and not a lot of options in terms of who you can pick up and trade for.

So my advice is take a calculated risk and start playing those guys with huge upside.  Sure you may lose, but we play to win the game!

Prediction Record: (12-16)

Week 5 Matchups

Tuchanka Thresher Maw’s (3-1)
Scottish Highlanders (2-2)
Analysis

Terry and the Thresher Maw’s have a great team going.  Speaking from personal experience as last week the Spectres had a huge lead, and the Maw’s fought back to win by 6.  It’s impressive and awe-inspiring to see a team come back from the brink of defeat.  On the flip side, Majikman and the Highlanders have also reinvented themselves after the loss of Jaamal Charles for the year.  With Calvin and Steve Johnson the Highlanders are able to possibly win every week.

It’s tough to pick but I’m going to go with the Thresher Maw’s on this one just because over the first four weeks of the season they have been more consistent in their scoring.  The Highlanders can still fluctuate from time and time and if they miss out on a huge performance from Calvin Johnson or Matthew Stafford, they could be in for a long week.

Predicted Winner: Tuchanka Thresher Maw’s

ARRGAN IISOU (2-2)
The Besaid Aurochs (1-3)
Analysis

Katie V and the Besaid Aurochs are having a really difficult season.  There just hasn’t been any consistency going on and some of these past four weeks have seen some really low points being put up on the board.  Meanwhile Jimmy and the pirates of ARRGAN IISOU, while they did lose against Gunshow, they have had a much better year.

I know it’s my wife and all but right now I just don’t have the confidence in her team and she’s going to need to make some major changes until I can hop back on board.  This week, I go with ARRGAN IISOU.

Predicted Winner: ARRGAN IISOU

English Kniggits (0-4)
Lunaris Robunnys (3-1)
Analysis

I had such a good feeling that last week Soah and the Kniggits were going to break on through and win a game.  They were right there and almost won against a heavily favored Fear Boner team.  This week though, the Kniggits got a tough game against the Robunnys that upon first inspection seems like a clear cut win for Yogi.  Yet when you start to look deeper into the matchups, Soah has a very good chance this week.  The Robunnys have a combination of bye weeks and injuries that are happening and that might be enough to spell their down fall.

Maybe I’m crazy but I’m going to keep going with Soah this week and pick the Kniggits to win out!

Predicted Winner: English Kniggits

Binary Rock-Jocks (2-2)
Team Malfunct (2-2)
Analysis

As I have said for a few weeks now, Malfunct has been making steady improvements to his team.  Same can be said for Binary and the Rock-Jocks.  Both of these players have really embraced the new game of Fantasy Football and gotten into it, and it’s really nice to see these two up and coming teams duke out in Week 5.  There’s a lot of superstition going on with Malfunct, claiming that I’m jinxing him each week that I pick him.  Well this week we get to put that to the test.

I’m going with the Rock-Jocks in this because the three headed RB monster of Ryan Matthews, Fred Jackson, and LaGarrette Blount is just way too impressive for me to ignore.  Team Malfunct has better players on it then it did Week 1, but those three RBs are all playing well now and can do some serious damage.  Let’s see if the jinx / reverse jinx continues!

Predicted Winner: Binary Rock-Jocks

Team Caporrino (1-3)
Zombie Black Bears (2-2)
Analysis

Well Cappy of Team Caporrino did actually check her team last week before the games started, but it ultimately didn’t help out all too much.  Now that I know she’s watching her team, I can have the option to pick her for games restored.

This week though, I’m not really feeling it.  The bottom line is the gem for Caporrino is Ray Rice and he has a bye week this week.  Eco and the Zombie Black Bears on the other hand have their full compliment of players ready for game day.  Not to mention, but it’s hard not to, that The Black Bears have Tom Brady.  That alone is going to compel me to think long and hard before I pick against them.

Predicted Winner: Zombie Black Bears

Citadel Spectres (3-1)
NJ Fear Boners (3-1)
Analysis

The Spectres were in complete control last week and then they met up with the MVP for the Thresher Maw’s … the Ravens Defense.  Now the Spectres are dealing with an injury to a player they hate (Rashard Mendenhall) and one they love (Andre Johnson).  They do have some great upside though with Darren McFadden, Cam Newton, and Steve Smith.  Yet with so little depth on the bench and a lot of their backups on Bye Week, this will be a difficult matchup.

The Fear Boners have the explosiveness of Michael Vick on their side, as well as high upside players like Jahvid Best, Santonio Holmes and Rob Gronkowski.  Upside players are dangerous because they are unpredictable, but when they are on it’s gorgeous.  This week I have to favor with the Fear Boners just because of the devastating injuries to the Spectres.  Perhaps I am wrong, perhaps I reverse jinxing, but in my heart I think this is how it will play out.

Predicted Winner: NJ Fear Boners

Week 5 Spotlight Match

Mars Space Cowboys (2-2)
Hoboken Dread Pirates (2-2)
Analysis

For those of you who are new to our little circle of friends, let me first say that Pedro and Chris are great friends.  They have been friends for many years, long before I ever joined up with the group.  That being said, they are also highly competitive and have had many rivarlies over the years in many different facets of life.  Didn’t matter if it was sports, video games, RPGs or whatever, Pedro and Chris were always gunning against each other.

This week has those two gladiators duking it out for g33kBowl Supremacy.  They are both 2-2, and only one of them can move on to be 3-2.  Pedro and the Space Cowboys have been getting very consistent play from the majority of their players.  Greg Jennings, Eli Manning and Matt Forte have all been doing a bang up job.  Yet as it goes sometimes, consistent isn’t enough and you just need explosive weeks.  They haven’t really had that yet.

Chris and the Dread Pirates started off slow but have been gaining momentum these past two weeks.  Getting more meaningful points out of Donovan McNabb, and Chris Johnson has helped highlight the great seasons of Wes Welker and Jimmy Graham.  This is a tough one to pinpoint but my gut is telling me to go with the Dread Pirates.  I think that Chris Johnson is starting to get going and that will give the necessary spark to push the Dread Pirates to victory, in my humble opinion.

Predicted Winner: Hoboken Dread Pirates
